What ingredients do you need to make your own hummus?
Making your own hummus is SO incredibly easy. You’ve probably seen all of the different varieties of hummus in the grocery store. And most of those have the same main ingredients, with different add-ins.
There are a few staples that every hummus traditionally has: garbanzo beans, tahini, garlic and olive oil. Of these ingredients the only one you might not have in your pantry already is tahini.
Tahini is a sesame paste that is popular in Eastern Mediterranean, North African and Middle Eastern Cuisine. You should be able to find it in a well stocked grocery store. I usually find it near the peanut butter or in the international cuisine aisle.
The rest of the ingredients are pretty much up to you. Want it really garlicky? Add some roasted garlic. Want a mediterranean twist? Add some olives. Taco flavored? Add some taco seasoning. The possibilities are endless.
Being a spicy food fan, it was only a matter of time before I created a Spicy Hummus.
Spicy Olive Hummus
Case in point, this was supposed to just be an olive hummus, but I had to make it spicy olive hummus. If I were making it for our entire family I would simply leave out the cayenne. But, it was a fun experiment that lead to delicious results. Olives are something both Mark and I thoroughly enjoy, and the heat level was perfect for us. Mark told me about 20 times it was delicious then I, with just a twinge of guilt, took the entire bowl to a lady's function.
As well as it was received I was glad there was a bit left over, which he and I were able to enjoy as a light night snack after the kids went to bed. We actually had it with pita, but I think I even prefer the nature's "scoops" that I originally served it with. Sweet peppers cut in half and seeded add a fresh crisp as well as nutrition.
It is an incredibly easy healthy recipe that I am sure you will love.
Serve with veggie strips, chips, crispy green bean chips, flat bread, focaccia bread, or eat it by the spoon :).
- 2 (16) ounces (840 g) cans chickpeas, one can drained, one reserved
- 2 Tablespoons hot sauce
- ½ cup (70 g) sesame seeds, toasted
- ½ lemon, peeled
- 2 garlic cloves, peeled
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt, optional
- With a peeler or paring knife, remove the peel and white pith from the lemon, leaving just the flesh. Place all ingredients into the Vitamix container in the order listed and secure the lid.
- Start the blender on its lowest speed, then quickly increase to its highest speed.
- Blend for 1 minute or until smooth, using the tamper to press ingredients toward the blades.
One of the ways to cut through the rich fatty consistency of hummus is with acidity. The lemon juice in most hummus recipes serves the same purpose but it may not be enough and that’s where sumac comes in.
This powdered spice is made from the dried berries of a tree in the cashew family. Sumac is used in dishes all over the Middle East for its ability to add a bright, lemony flavor. You can add the sumac in with the other ingredients or sprinkle it on right before you serve the dish.
Coffee caramel cake

So dinner’s over, but you’ve got plenty of tahini left. What are you supposed to do with it? Two words: tahini pudding. Do you want to make a tahini cake? You can! Benjamina Ebuehi did one for The Guardian last year. On the surface, it’s just a normal coffee caramel cake, but the addition of tahini gives it a sparkling pecan without nuts, which is great if someone in your family has a nut allergy. (This works wonders with carrot cakes too.)
